Germany offers two federal volunteer service routes — the BFD (Bundesfreiwilligendienst) and the FSJ (Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr). BFD — Federal Volunteer Service

The BFD (Bundesfreiwilligendienst) is Germany's Federal Volunteer Service program, offering people of all ages the opportunity to gain valuable work experience while supporting social, healthcare, educational, and environmental organisations. It is an excellent pathway to improve your German language skills, experience German culture, and develop professional skills.

BFD program highlights

  • Age: 18 years and above (no upper age limit)
  • Duration: 6–18 months (usually 12 months)
  • German language: may vary by organisation
  • IELTS: not required
  • Monthly allowance: approximately €350–€500 (varies by organisation)
  • Free or subsidised accommodation (depending on the provider)

FSJ — Voluntary Social Year

The FSJ (Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr) is a voluntary social service program in Germany for young people who want to gain work experience, improve their German language skills, and contribute to society. Participants work in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, kindergartens, and social care institutions while receiving financial support and valuable international experience.
